In an industry dominated by large national corporations, our competitive edge is to be an agile and local company. We do not want to chase volumes, but instead want to offer genuine partnership to companies and design a longer career path for employees, instead of temporary jobs.
We first established Arctic Career in Rovaniemi, and during our first fiscal year, already two subsidiaries, to Kittilä and Oulu. One might say that the company was founded, but the group came semi-accidentally. When working with good people, things progress smoothly on their own. What we can be proud of is that our group was established without external investor money.
Our group’s story could also be named a ‘growth through good people’ story. For we have grown and expanded in such a way that when we have met people who have shared our company’s values, we have embarked on a partnership journey. We wanted to create a model in which our group is led ‘from the bottom up’, meaning our local entrepreneurs are shareholders as well as board members in their own units.
When we had established Arctic Career, a conversation arose with Hannu Romppanen about his interest in entrepreneurship in the staffing industry as well. During the summer, Hannu runs a horticulture business, Kaukosen Puutarha. We agreed on a risk-free start by initially having Hannu join us as an employee under a work contract. The aim was to establish a jointly owned business in Kittilä once the operations took off.
Hannu began working with us in September 2022. Once the tourist season opened up for us, we launched Nordic Career Oy in January 2023. During the start-up phase, Minna Mantovaara, one of Hannu’s old colleagues from years back, also joined as one of the founders.
We created a co-ownership model for the company, which guides operations from a local standpoint. Hannu and Minna work together as local entrepreneurs at Nordic Career.
Sini Setälä is Heidi’s former coworker from their summer job days in 2016-2017. When we initiated operations in Rovaniemi, it was clear that we would eventually expand to Oulu at some point. Sini was interested in becoming part of the story.
Sini started in January. We conducted market research and sales. Initially, agreements with employees and client companies were made through Arctic Career. Once we achieved certain sales targets and profitability figures, we established our own company in Oulu. This happened faster than we expected, so in May 2023, we founded Botnia Career Oy. Sini serves as Botnia’s local entrepreneur.
